2025, fabrics, papers, plants and mushrooms cut out of vintage school posters, tea and avocado dye, ebroidery thread and normal thread, 21 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches.
I made this artwork in the spring of 2025 when the wild flowers had just begun to push and the leaves on the trees were translucent day-glo chartreuse. We were visiting our friends in the Gloucestershire countryside where you can almost watch the seasons unfold in real time. Despite the fact that the UK is considered one of the most nature depleted countries, I find the nature totally intoxicating. It is not always glorious weather, but to me, uncultivated sturdy growth is everywhere, enriching our environment.
For a few years, I have used my stolen moments to draw with pencil in nature. Here I attempted to embroider “en plein air”. It obviously is not technically professional and it takes SOOOOO long, but it has been an interesting study. (I am struggling with another one from the summer right now.) Spring being haphazard, makes this artwork a bit that way too. The embroidery is higgledy piggledy. Other random paper placements are too. I tried to depict an uncultivated place that is not curated. I felt that including some hard edges and artificial colours was importantly contrasty and also reality. If I am being honest, I find being in controlled and tidy nature surprisingly disturbing and against God, (in an unreligious way).
