Sage Firmament

2003, papers, gouache, ink and holes on indigo gampi, 38 x 24 1/2 inches.

This indigo gampi is very special and is probably extinct by now, with no one with the skills to reproduce it.  To me, this paper is as divine as the celestial skies.  I try to be faithful to the paper’s character.   It dictates its artistic result. This particular artwork is paths and patterns of dots and air. Some of the dots are gouache and others are leftover holes from different papers that I used for other artworks.  Each little leftover hole has a story of its own. It is just like every blade of grass, fluff of dust, or planet in the universe, has a significant story to tell.
