Land of Nee

1997, papers, photos, tissue, staples, string, ink, gouache, 19 x 37 inches.

Many of these papers held the stamps that my grandfather collected. Many of them came from Germany when he was fighting there during WWII.  The cut out shapes are echoes of the franking on the stamps.  This is like a blown out and deserted  landscape to me.  There however are bits of light and life dotted here and there and and it is far away and exotic.

The “Land of Nee” is like the “Knights who say Nee”.  It is a random and funny place, but a very powerful place as the name alone is enough to make the knights cower and run away.
