Lace and Dots

2004, dots and lace on paper with holes, 8 x 9 3/4 inches.

When I first discovered the crazy amount of old lace that sold on Portobello Road, I was so excited!  I was drawn to its intricacy and detail.  The holes in the lace seemed empty windows.  Who or what lives inside could give it an identity.  I was inspired by all the possibilities of filling each one. I put a dot, from my international, and multi-historical dot connection into each little lace window, giving the lace a place in this world.  If I wanted to, I could analyze the lace doodle from the dots and where they come from, but I think that I will take a pass on that!  If you think about it, this is the same with people and their brains. Our little flicks of memory make us who we are.
