Autumn Equinox, 2024

Papers, white gold, stamps, handmade wool felt, indigo dyed velvet and linen, other fabrics and papers, holes and protrusions, string, thread, flowers, ink, indigo abaca from Carriage House Papers, 36 x 32 inches.

I might change the name. This is the second year in a row that without being aware of the day, I started an artwork based upon the full moon autumn equinox.   The  huge moon is imbued with the last vestiges of the sun’s warmth,  as if when the summer passes to fall, the sun leaves a bit of itself on the moon.   The moon’s rays, however, continue to be cool white gold.   Faded butterfly moths are dancing for the last time before the autumn takes them.

The earth, though smaller, is not inconsequential.  It  is a reminder that our existence in this cosmos is tiny.  I have chosen to focus on the maze of intertwined papers and fabric bits and pieces that make up the soil and roots, the protector of all life when the top crust of the earth mostly dies.  There is a line of mushrooms to give homage to the humble fungus, without which we would not be alive. I have also included some random leftover plants and flowers because most of what we see in nature is not politely designed.
